What is the difference between a refractor and a reflector telescope?

My son wants a telescope for Christmas, but we're pretty ignorant as to what kind to get. He has 10 years, but extremely intelligent and interested. Do not want a piece of junk, but still want something enough good for the support of his interest. Advice?

I am a big fan of dobsonians (I have 2) but not good for young children! They are designed to be easy to move and children tend to cling to the "powerful and moving when it should be stationary. Not only that, but undriven Dobs are, what have to be moved by hand to follow the object you are viewing, I have yet to meet a 10 year old boy who can do that. You obviously can get mounts motorized to follow the object for you (plus shipping), but I found another problem with young people - some of them looking through the eyepiece, rather than through it! I am passionate about teaching astronomy to children, but I would be very sure they could actually use and enjoy a "scope before spending a lot of money at a time. But suppose that a telescope is right for your child. Reflectors give you more bang for the buck, but the eye will very high off the ground - perhaps too high. decent refractors are much more expensive, but the eye is below, and when used with a star are diagonal (which makes the eye in a more comfortable position) much more useful for short people. A third type of 'scope, reflectors, which use lenses and mirrors. There are some very affordable, but I think the sub $ 500 cases are too small to give pleasant views - no wow wow "." Whichever you choose, please remember to take practice to use, and will never see things like the Hubble images!

7ft Newtonian (reflector) telescope Photo Mugs

William Herschel made and sold many telescopes of this type. He used his own 7ft telescope (which would have been very similar to this one) with a 6.2 inch aperture magnifying images 227 times (depending on the eyepiece used), to make his second review of the heavens in 1781 from his house in New Kings Street, Bath. It was during this review that he discovered the planet Uranus. Herschel was able ...
