My 7yo wants a telescope?

My soon 7yo wants me to put the telescope in the B-Day list. She wants to see the stars and outer space. I have never heard speak to express that interest before. So my Q is - what can you do with a telescope (around $ 75 range), the kind of openness is needed to see any detail on the moon, or anything cold in space. What else can you do with a telescope? Bird watching? Is there a site that can help to learn and get things to see and do with it? I do not want to look at the moon and say "Cool" and do with it. Any advice would be appreciate it. WOW respond effectively to so many. How it will work great binoculars? Is not telescope designed to work better in the dark? I like the idea of ​​binoculars otherwise, as I know it's easier to see with both eyes of one. And of course, portability is much better.

A 7-year-old is probably too young to use a telescope. What I'd recommend instead is a small binocular, 7x35 or 8x40 for example. This will be useful for astronomy, but also is good for bird watching, plane spots, and so on. I'd also recommend the book Nightwatch by Terence Dickinson (Firefly). Although written for adults, is very well illustrated and understandable to children.
